We are the Future: Project Pack
Created by
This pack will help students to connect with their role as a future ancestor.
Have you ever stopped to think about how our actions now might have an impact on people who will live 50 or 100 years after us?
The Haudenosaunee people of North America have a principle known as 'seven generation stewardship', where they take into account how their actions impact present and future generations. It means that, when they are making a decision, they consider how it might affect the welfare and wellbeing of people who are born seven generations after them.
During this project, pupils will explore what it means to be a 'future ancestor', and how they can create a legacy of a better future for the people who live after them. There is no right or wrong way to use this project pack - they should approach the topic in a way that most inspires them! Everything from art, to science, geography to design, can make the future a better place for future generations.
This action research project is broken into four parts:
- Observe who you are and who your ancestors were
- Plan the legacy you would like to leave for future generations
- Take action to create something for future generations
- Reflect on the impact your actions may have going forward
This pack will guide them through each of the stages of the project, so that by the end of it they will have explored the question: "How can I be a good future ancestor?"
This pack is released in partnership with the Philharmonia Orchestra, as part of our collaboration with the Philharmonia and their Artist in Residence Love Ssega.
