The We Are Nature: Action Research Project pack invites young people to connect with nature, and to make a positive change in their local community.

It can be used by school pupils or those learning at home, as well as extra-curricular clubs, youth groups, uniformed groups, Duke of Edinburgh, Youth Parliament meetings, student councils and more.

About the pack

Human activity - like burning fossil fuels, cutting down forests, polluting air and water, and over-relying on single use plastic - is harming wildlife and damaging ecosystems around the world.

However, scientists have found that spending time in nature is not only good for our mental and physical wellbeing, but when people connect with nature it can lead to a more sustainable society. By connecting with local natural spaces, and using our skills to take action to protect them, we can make positive change in the world.

This action research project is broken into four parts:

  • Observe what is happening in a natural space near you
  • Plan how you are going to make a positive difference
  • Take action by putting your plan into practice
  • Reflect on what happened and think about what you could do next

This pack will guide young people through each of the stages of the project, so that by the end of it they will have taken action for a better future. Whether they choose to design a bee hotel, start a litter picking campaign, or compose a piece of music which captures the voice of their local natural space - they should approach the topic in a way that most inspires them.

This pack has been designed to complement our Global Learning Wall Planner, with the idea that it can be completed over the course of one term, with one section being completed per month.

However, the project is not time or subject specific, so it can take place at any time of year, or over any length of time - whether over a week, month, term, or year.
