The Art of Inequality

This set of resources from Oxfam helps bring the world into Art & Design lessons. Students explore the power of 'infographics' and learn to make them, to illustrate issues of global inequality. Take inspiration from information designers like David McCandless and support learners to critically engage with global inequality whilst meeting Art & Design curriculum requirements. Analyse infographics and apply design principles in Photoshop to create striking visual representations of inequality. This project will allow Key Stage 3 learners (age 11 to 14) to:

• Develop a critical understanding of traditional and contemporary graphic design practices, expressing reasoned judgements that can inform their own work.
• Appreciate the causes and effects of inequality and the possible solutions to it.
• Increase their digital media skills by using Photoshop (or equivalent) to manipulate design elements (colour, space, composition, texture) to represent increasingly complex sets of data relating to inequality.

The resource is made up of teachers notes, a slideshow and plans for five one-hour sessions.
