Slavery then and now: learning from the toppling of the Colston statue

Anti Slavery International have developed this informative powerpoint lesson to help children learn about the history of slavery and how people are affected by slavery today. It is designed for children aged 11-14 (KS3), but can be used by anyone that wants to learn more, and it’s created for use in the home or classroom environment. 

Beginning with the contemporary Black Lives Matter movement, this lesson looks at slavery past and present, and invites learners to consider its impact and how it can be challenged. Using the toppling of the Colston statue in Bristol as a starting point it moves from the transatlantic slave trade and abolition to how modern racism and slavery manifests itself today.
