English and Global Citizenship

This guide has been developed by Oxfam together with the National Association of Teachers of English (NATE), and explores 'why teach English with a Global Citizenship approach?

Answers to that question include: developing learners' empathy, respect for diversity and imagination to recognise their place in local, national and global communities; expanding learners' thinking and horizons; developing critical literacy; providing the wider context necessary for language and literature to be fully understood; and enabling learners to appreciate a range of perspectives.

This guide provides a wide range of practical ideas for using exploring global issues through speaking and listening, reading, writing and media literacty . It also has an extensive list of story books and useful resources for exploring further.
