Breaking The Mould: Gender Stereotypes
Created by
The NEU worked for two years with five primary schools to consider how ‘traditional’ gender stereotypes could be challenged in nursery and primary classrooms. The project quickly acquired the name Breaking the Mould.
The NEU website provides an overview of how the different schools looked at the impact of gender stereotypes on children and considered how they could begin to unsettle some of the established assumptions about what girls and boys might like or do.
Publications available on the website include:
- Stereotypes Stop You Doing Stuff - project report with conclusions and themes from the five schools.
- Boys' Things and Girls' Things? - information on creating and updating resources as well as specific examples of practice from the project schools.
- It's Child's Play This - notes on the project books and how to use them.
- Breaking the Mould - article on children's books that challenge gender stereotypes.
