Arrivals: Making Sheffield Home

Arrivals: Making Sheffield is a photo exhibition documenting and celebrating the diversity of Sheffield’s population. The photographer, Jeremy Abrahams, has made Sheffield-based portraits of 72 people who arrived in the city from another country between 1945 and 2016. This teaching resource is based on the exhibition and is made up of four lesson plans comprising PDFs and PowerPoints. Each lesson relates to particular subjects (History, Geography, Religious Studies, Citizenship and PSHE) however they are also designed to be sufficiently cross-curricular to be taught together. They promote a positive conception of ‘Fundamental British Values’ covering issues around democratic values, civil liberties, the law and mutual respect and tolerance. The content is primarily aimed at students in Years 9 and 10 (ages 13 to 15) - the topics covered and content are mature and challenging, and there is lot of group work. The lessons cover the following themes, available as both Sheffield-specific and UK-wide options:

• Democratic rights in the UK and around the world.
