80-20 Development in an unequal world

This popular development education resource was first produced in the early 1980s. It has now been completely revised and updated for its 7th edition. Its title reflects the fact that over 80% of the world's population lives in the "Developing World" and less than 20% live in the "Developed World", but consume far more of the world's resources. It asserts that such inequalities did not happen by chance but have been created and are maintained by an unjust and unsustainable model of "development" (and "underdevelopment").

Through 15 themed chapters, the resource introduces, explores and debates key issues and topics in human development, human rights and sustainability. A broad range of topics is covered, including: defining and debating development; climate change and sustainability; hunger; population; women's rights; human rights; HIV/AIDS; education; the economics and politics of inequality; aid; and more. The resource is illustrated throughout with charts, graphs, infographics, photos and hard-hitting cartoons.

This is an engaging and challenging resource for upper secondary and post-16 students exploring development issues in subjects like Geography or Economics. It is also excellent background reading for teachers.
