Climate Change in Urban Areas: Bangladesh Case Study
Created by
University of Manchester
Bangladesh is a country that is severely at risk from the effects of climate change. Its inhabitants are facing increasingly challenging living conditions due to frequent flooding, rising temperatures and regular storm surges. This detailed resource from the University of Manchester investigates the impact of climate change on urban areas, focusing on the real-life stories of families living in informal settlements in Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka. Using videos, powerful images and comprehensive background information, students can explore the impact of climate change on low-income families and understand the different social, economic and environmental factors involved. The resource is part of a programme of research on climate change vulnerability led by Dr Joanne Jordan. It includes:
- Learning objectives
- Links to 3 videos, each approx. 5 minutes long
- Class discussion points
- Independent tasks
- Homework suggestions
- Background information
- Glossary with definitions
- Project photographs, signposted with links.
This resource is most suitable for Key Stage 3 Geography students and can either be followed as a structured lesson plan or used flexibly to provide ideas and activities to support learning. All students who complete and submit one of the suggested homeworks will also be entered into a prize draw with the chance to win £40 worth of vouchers for Ticketmaster. Photo Credit: Joanne Jordan
